O que há de novo? | What's new?

Está na altura de fazer uma actualização das minhas últimas acções. Dividirei então este post em duas partes: leitura e escrita.

1) Leitura
De momento encontro-me a ler o primeiro livro em inglês que me foi oferecido em formato de papel: “Blind Hunger”, de Araminta Star Matthews. Estou na página 140 de 232 e espero acabá-lo entre esta semana e a próxima.
Ao mesmo tempo encontro-me a ler o segundo volume da saga “The Eternal Series”, intitulado “The Eternal Echo”. Esta história, da autoria de Candy Crum, ainda se encontra em fase de construção, mas a autora pediu-me para ler o que tem até ao momento e dar a minha opinião, e é o que tenho feito. Para quando prevejo a conclusão desta leitura? Tendo em conta que estou a lê-la em formato digital e não é a única história por que tenho que “passar os olhos”, talvez a termine no final da próxima semana.
O que se segue? Duas pequenas histórias de terror de Jackie Williams, uma escritora muito simpática de Gales, que me tem dado uma grande ajuda com a tradução do meu livro para inglês. Provavelmente lerei “RoadKill” e “Gerald’s Car” no mesmo dia, tendo em conta que não são muito grandes.

O próximo passo consiste na leitura da história “The Chosen Ones”, de Celester Mejia. O livro ainda não foi publicado e ele, à semelhança da Candy, pediu-me a minha opinião antes que este esteja disponível para o público.
Em simultâneo com a narrativa do Celester tenciono ler o ebook “Raven”, de Suzy Turner. Era suposto ter iniciado esta leitura antes, mas “tempo” é um conceito que me tem escapado por entre os dedos. Bem precisava que o dia tivesse mais horas! O que mais me deixa frustrada é que, por vezes tenho um bocadinho mais vago, podia fazer o que tenho a fazer, porém estou tão cansada que me falta a vontade. Enfim, também tenho que dar algum descanso à minha mente de vez em quando.

2) Escrita
Continuo a trabalhar com a escritora Jackie Williams na tradução do meu último livro (ainda por publicar, não é, senhores editores?), “Perdidos”. É verdade que tinha traduzido o texto entre Maio e Junho deste ano, porém o meu inglês estava tão “enferrujado”, que tive que recorrer ao tradutor do Google e trabalhar as frases depois. O que esperavam? Não tocava em material em inglês desde o primeiro ano da faculdade; já lá vão sete anos! Entretanto, comecei a ler livros de escritores ingleses, o que me ajudou a recuperar um pouco e me proporcionou uma oportunidade de aprendizagem. Há tantas diferenças entre a literatura inglesa e a portuguesa! Sabiam que, por exemplo, os diálogos em inglês são escritos entre aspas, ao passo que nós utilizamos os dois pontos, parágrafo e travessão? Claro que isto não é novidade para quem lê em inglês há muito tempo, contudo para mim foi uma novidade. Traduzir certas expressões também é uma dor de cabeça! A título de exemplo, posso dizer que em inglês não existem “paninhos quentes”, mas sim “soft soap” (sabão suave). Pois, tem tudo a ver…!
Enfim, por entre uma dificuldade ou outra, tenho alterado os capítulos traduzidos de acordo com o que aprendi ultimamente e depois tenho-os remetido para a Jackie, para que ela os corrija. Depois de os ver, ela envia-mos de volta e eu faço uma nova verificação, pois há sempre frases ou expressões cujo significado não compreendeu, ou frases que julgou quererem dizer algo e alterou-as até fugirem ao significado original. Que podemos fazer? As nossas línguas são diferentes! É algo que não se pode evitar.
Neste momento encontro-me a modificar o capítulo 27 (de 32) e a Jackie já me remeteu dez capítulos corrigidos, embora eu ainda não tenha verificado o 9º e o 10º. Se conseguir alterar um capítulo por dia, terei a minha parte concluída no domingo; depois só tenho que ver as coisas à medida que a Jackie as for enviando. Espero mesmo ter tudo feito até domingo. E porquê? Fui a (mais!) uma entrevista de emprego e, se ficar com a vaga, irei trabalhar por turnos e não terei tanto tempo para me dedicar a traduções. Claro que até posso nem ficar com o trabalho; aliás, ir a entrevistas e passar todas as fases para depois não ficar com o posto não é novidade para mim – já há um ano que estou desempregada, sei bem do que falo. De qualquer forma, prevenir nunca fez mal a ninguém, por isso “correcções a todo o vapor” até domingo!
Quanto à versão portuguesa de “Perdidos”, tendo em conta que nenhuma das “grandes” editoras se mostrou disponível para publicar o meu livro, tenciono aproveitar para fazer uma nova revisão. Sabem como é: alterar uma coisinha ou outra, cortar alguma informação que talvez não seja tão relevante… E depois pedirei a uma professora de Português para corrigir a história. Talvez no Natal de 2012 a publicação de “Perdidos” seja uma realidade. Até lá irei trabalhar no segundo volume, dado que a história não acaba no primeiro ;-)


Hi, everyone! It’s time for an update on my last actions. I’ll split this post in two parts: reading and writing.

1) Reading
At the moment I’m reading the first paperback book in English ever offered to me – “Blind Hunger”, by Araminta Star Matthews. I’m on page 140 of 232 and I hope to finish reading it between this week and the next one.
At the same time I’m reading the second volume of “The Eternal Series”, called “The Eternal Echo”. This story, by Candy Crum, is still being written. However, and once the author asked to read what she has so far and to give her my opinion, that’s what I’ve been doing. When will I conclude this reading? Bearing in mind that this is an ebook and this isn’t the only thing I have to read, maybe I’ll finish it by the end of next week.
What’s next? Two short horror stories, by Jackie Williams; she’s a very nice writer from Wales, who has been providing me a huge help in what comes to translating my book to English. Most likely I’ll read both “RoadKill” and “Gerald’s Car” the same day, once they aren’t too big.
The following step is to read “The Chosen Ones”, by Celester Mejia. His book is not published yet and, like Candy, he asked my opinion before it is available to the public.
Simultaneously, I intend to read the ebook “Raven”, by Suzy Turner. I was supposed to have started this reading before, but “time” is a concept that has escaped through my fingers lately. I really needed the day to have a few more hours! What frustrates me the most is that, sometimes I have an open space, I could take it to do what I have to, still I’m so tired that I don’t have the will to. Well, my mind also needs some rest from time to time.

2) Writing
I’m still working with the writer Jackie Williams to translate my last book (still to be published, right Mister Publishers?), “Perdidos” (“Lost Ones”). The truth is I had translated the text between May and June 2011; nevertheless, my English was so rusty that I had to use Google Translator and work on the sentences next. What did you expect? I didn’t touch in anything in English since my first year in college; it has been 7 years! Meantime I started to read books of English writers, which allowed me to recover a little and it provided me some learning. There are so many differences between English and Portuguese literature! Did you know that, for example, dialogues in English are written within inverted commas, while we use two points (:), new paragraph and a dash? Of course this isn’t new to who reads in English for a while, but to me it was new.
Translating some expressions is also a headache! For example, I can say that in English there’s no such thing as “hot fabrics”, but “soft soap”. Yep, they have nothing to do with one another…!
Anyway, amid one difficulty or another, I have changed the chapters I translated before, according to what I’ve learned recently. Then I send them to Jackie, for her to correct. Next she sends them back to me and I check them once more, because there’s always sentences or expressions which meaning Jackie didn’t understand; or there are phrases she thought meanging one thing, she changed them and they became totally different from what I meant. What can we do? Our languages are different! It’s something we can’t avoid.
At this moment I’m modifying chapter 27 (of 32), and Jackie has already sent me back ten chapters, although I haven’t checked 9th and 10th yet. If I manage to change a chapter per day, I’ll have my part done by Sunday; then I just have to check things as Jackie sends them.
I really hope to have everything ready by Sunday.Why? I went to (another!) job interview, and if I get the spot, I’ll work by shifts and I won’t have much time for translating. Of course I may not get the job; in fact, going to interviews, pass all phases and then not get the post is not new to me – I’m unemployed over one year, so I know what I’m talking about. Anyway, preventing never harmed anyone, so I’ll “translate at full speed” till Sunday!
As for the Portuguese version of “Perdidos”, once none of the major publishers showed any interest in publishing my book, I intend to take advantage of that and do some more editing. You know, to change one thing or another, cut some information that may not be that relevant… And then I’ll ask the help of a Portuguese teacher, to correct everything. Maybe by the Christmas of 2012 “Perdidos” will be released. Until then, I’ll work on the second volume, once the story doesn’t end with the first one ;-)
