*SPOILER ALERT*
Adoro a capa =)
I finished reading "Airel" on January 19, 2012 and I rate it four stars. I would rate it 4.5 if it was possible. Why not go for 5? Because it doesn’t have the “x” factor that would make me sigh for a book, although it is pretty close.
First of all, and even though I know I shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, I want to congratulate Claudia by her excellent work. I love the cover =)
Now, what did I like in this story? I like the fact that it mixes action and romance – we have a good dose of both. Whenever we’re sick of corny lines, the authors change their strategy and present us an action scene. I like this balance.
I liked Airel. She’s a strong character, who always comes out on top despite all the setbacks. Her romance with Michael is also beautiful, although it’s not “consummated". How about a little kiss at least?! Lol! In this regard, I have a repair to do: after the fight with Stan and the Seer, Airel joins Kreios in the library and she cries a lot because of her broken heart. That’s a scene I would change. She had cried a river before going to rescue Kim, it didn’t have to be repeated all over again. I think the scene could have been better used; for example, Kreios could have told her more about her origins or about Eirel.
The revelation about James was interesting. I suspected about Michael’s connection to the Brotherhood, but not about James’ nature. Oh! And I didn’t foresee the identity of the crazy killer who showed up after Airel was kidnapped. Surprises are always welcome.
I have an observation to make: both narratives about Stan and Kreios are in the third person, but when it comes to Airel, it is presented to us in the first person. I assumed that, as this book was about Airel, that would be why the story was told directly by her. However, I read the first chapter of the next volume, "Michael" (I know, I cheated...) and this continues in the third person. I thought it would be presented in the first, since it is the story of Michael, but this didn’t happen. Therefore, I consider it would make sense that the whole narrative was presented in the third person. The authors have already shown that they can do it, so why not bet on that?
I also liked the pace of the story. It wasn’t too rushed and things took their time.
Finally, the finale was exciting. I spent the whole time asking for a turnaround, not believing that that was what fate had in store for Airel. It's an ending that leaves us hoping and yearning for more. Next stop: "Michael"!
