OPINIÃO 

Eis um livro que não acabei de ler. Li metade e saltei páginas até ao fim, fechando-o em definitivo a 10 de abril de 2013. É o primeiro livro que me desmotiva de tal modo que lhe dou duas estrelas. 

Tinha algumas expectativas, pois o segundo volume deu a entender que o primeiro seria muito melhor, mas as coisas não foram bem assim. Fiquei extremamente desapontada e só posso concluir que não gosto mesmo do estilo de escrita de John Updike. Perde-se em tanta palha que nada contribui para a história, que só me faz lembrar uma vizinha chata a querer contar todas as cusquices e nós aborrecidos, com vontade de desaparecer dali. Perde-se em descrições, vai buscar informações completamente irrelevantes, tem frases super longas que, quando chego ao fim, já não sei o que dizia o início… E a sinopse prometida “humor sórdido”… não vi onde. Resumindo: desisto de John Updike.

REVIEW 

Here is a book that I just couldn’t finish reading. I read half of it and jumped to the end, closing it for good on April 10th, 2013. This was the first book that discouraged me so much that I rate it two stars. 

I had some expectations, since the second volume has hinted that the former would be much better, but things didn’t turn out that way. I was extremely disappointed and I can only conclude that I don’t like the writing style of John Updike. He loses himself in so much unimportant stuff that contributes nothing to the story that it just reminds me of a neighbor wanting to tell us all the gossip and you just stay there, bored to death, wanting to get away. He loses himself in descriptions, shares a lot of completely irrelevant information, has super long sentences that when I get to the end, I do not know what the beginning says... And the synopsis promised "nasty humor"... I guess I missed it. In short: I give up on John Updike.

OPINIÃO

Acabei de ler este livro a 31 de março de 2013 e dou-lhe três estrelas.

Sinceramente, não gostei muito e fiquei desapontada. Como tinha visto na FoxLife uma série com o mesmo título, esperava algo mais desse género, mas saiu-me completamente ao lado – não tem nada a ver. Conforme me apercebi depois, afinal este é o segundo volume de uma série e o primeiro chama-se “As Bruxas de Eastwick” – talvez esse seja mais parecido com a série. Vou ver se está disponível na biblioteca municipal.

Quanto a estas viúvas, é uma história que achei aborrecida, com demasiada descrição e momentos mortos. Basicamente, as três mulheres ficam viúvas e agora, sozinhas, velhas e com os filhos criados, tentam fazer algo com os últimos anos que lhes restam, nomeadamente passear e conhecer sítios novos. Achei interessante a perspetiva que algumas pessoas de idade possam ter sobre certos assuntos, mas, no geral, foi demasiado aborrecido para mim, pelo que, admito, passei muitas páginas à frente, lendo apenas os diálogos em algumas, mas enfim… ao menos cheguei ao fim.

REVIEW

I just read this book on March 31^st 2013 and I rate it three stars.

Honestly, I did not like it and it was disappointed. As I had watched on FoxLife a series with the same title, I expected something more like that, but is had nothing to do with it. As I realized later, this is the second volume of a series and the first is called "The Witches of Eastwick" - maybe this is more like the series. I'll see if it is available in the municipal library.

As for these widows, it’s a story that I found boring, with too much description and dead moments. Basically, the three women widowed and now, alone, and with their children raised, they try to do something with the last few years left to them, including touring and meeting new sites. I found it interesting the perspective that some older people might have about certain issues, but overall, it was too boring for me, so, I admit, I passed many pages ahead, just reading the dialogues in some, but anyway... at least, I got to the end.
