Marina e Sofia são irmãs, mas são muito distantes uma da outra e não apenas por viverem uma com a mãe e a outra com o pai. Isto espelha a realidade de muitos irmãos que são deveras diferentes, tanto, que o parentesco passaria despercebido a muita gente. Pessoalmente, eu e a minha irmã também somos tão diferentes, que nunca fomos muito próximas; só ultimamente, com o crescimento dela (os anos trazem juizinho), é que as coisas têm mudado. Não é nada de novo; apenas mais uma coisa normal e que decidi usar no livro por ser verdadeiro.

A Marina tem esse nome, numa espécie de homenagem a uma antiga colega de escola que me deu uma ajudinha quando precisei – achei que era uma boa forma de retribuir o favor. Quanto ao facto da personagem ser a típica “marrona”, essa característica herdou de mim. Há quem diga que a Marina e algumas das suas atitudes não são credíveis, mas o que posso dizer? Eu, naquela idade, era assim e tinha um comportamento semelhante, por isso, não sei que dizer a quem faz essa crítica… Relativamente ao porquê de a ter feito tão devotada à escola, precisava que ela fosse atinada e tivesse uma vida monótona que pudesse virar de pernas para o ar com um simples evento. E assim aconteceu.

Marina has that name, in a sort of homage to a former classmate who gave me a hand when I needed it - I thought it was a good way to return the favor.
