Guest post by Jana Oliver, author of Demon Trappers

Continuaram a sussurrar-me aos ouvidos.

A girl, a guy and some seriously badass Hellspawn...

When the fourth book in my Demon Trappers’ series was published way back in 2012, my publishers said, “This is the last book.” My readers were sad. So was I, because deep in my heart I knew I’d always planned for six books. There was more “story” to tell.

Fast forward to 2013 when my readers kept nudging me, wanting more Riley Blackthorne and Denver Beck books. Where they going to get engaged, married? Have babies? (I get a lot of e-mails about that last one.)

So I wrote and independently published GRAVE MATTERS (Demon Trappers #4.5) which is a novella. It’s primary setting is Edinburgh, Scotland where Beck is pursuing his training to become a grand master. Riley joins him there and bad stuff ensues (as it often does with these two). But at the end of that book we find them <SPOILER> engaged and looking forward to the future, stronger than ever.

A year or so passed as I worked on other books, but my two favorite characters kept elbowing me in the ribs. Kept whispering in my ears. When I took a break between projects this spring, MIND GAMES came out of the end of my fingers at lightening speed. It went so fast it was embarrassing. Apparently having some time to think through the story made it easier to write.

I’m a big fan of “unintended consequences”, those things that came back to haunt you because you did what was right at a certain moment. Riley is facing those kind of problems after her near death in Edinburgh. Keen to protect herself, and her fiancé, Denver Beck, she’s learning magic from the witches and the summoners.

But that’s a problem for some folks. Riley is faced with two paths: abandon the dream she’s had since her father first became a master demon trapper, or go in a new direction. A direction filled with even more uncertainty and danger.

The thing I like most about Riley and Den is that they continue to grow over the course of the series. They make mistakes, but they learn, they mature. And their love remains strong throughout all that Hell (and everyday life) can throw at them. I love writing their stories.

Now that MIND GAMES is out, I foresee one more book in the series. No, there won’t be any births (grin) but the reason that Riley and Beck had endured so much, become who they are, will be revealed. And, hopefully, they can overcome the gravest danger than threatens not only them, but the city they call home.

Opinião: Mind Games (The Demon Trappers #5)

SINOPSE

SINOPSIS
Riley Blackthorne’s life as a Demon Trapper is about to hit the wall. Knowing she will always be a target for those who want to exploit her “connections” with Hell, she’s learning defensive magic. It seems the only way to ensure she and her fiancé, Denver Beck, have a future together. But not everyone in Atlanta, or at the Vatican, is pleased by this news. In fact, some want to ban the use of all magic, and Riley would make the perfect scapegoat.
As a new demonic enemy stalks her, Guild politics roil the city, throwing the trappers into chaos. To protect herself and the man she loves, Riley will be forced to choose: continue in her legendary father’s footsteps, or carve her own path. A path that may well lead to her losing everything she so desperately seeks to protect.

REVIEW
I finished reading this book on November 19th 2015 and I rate it four stars.
I was pleased to read something more in this series. Just when we thought the story was over, Jana Oliver decided to push forward in time and let us take a peek at the future of Riley and Beck. And it seems that everything remains the same, with old Lucifer and demons doing their thing. The biggest news is on Riley, who began learning magic and started with a light-blue robe right away. This makes us ask ourselves about what secrets will this character find out about herself. It also raises other questions, such as, for example, would Riley's mother be a witch and she did not know about it and inherited part of her powers/ talent? I think that we will find it out in the next book.
What pleased me most in this book is that the author never runs out of subject: there are always things happening and the characters' lives progress. I'll wait for the next volume to go to the wedding and to learn how Riley manages her new job.
I take the opportunity to thank Jana Oliver for providing me a copy of "Mind Games" and note that, later this week I will publish a post by this author ;-)

A ler...

Entrevista/ Interview: Jana Oliver

RUTE - Hi, Jana! Riley and Beck are back in a new story. What led to you to continue their story?
JANA - They just wouldn’t leave me alone. ;-) I knew their story wasn’t quite over, but I wasn’t sure what was going to happen after GRAVE MATTERS. Then suddenly the story was there, in my head, and I had to write it. MIND GAMES (Book #5) flowed out my fingers very quickly. But then Riley and Beck always tell me what to write. The new book will be out in October and is set in Atlanta.

RUTE - What happens in "Grave Matters"?
JANA - CAUTION – SPOILERS if you haven’t read Book #4. Here’s the back cover copy: A legendary Demon Trapper, Riley Blackthorne frequently battles with Hell’s minions. So when she travels to Scotland to meet up with her hunky boyfriend, and celebrate her eighteenth birthday, she’s thrilled at the chance to leave Atlanta and its troubles behind. Denver Beck, who has been studying for months to become a Grand Master – a rare and highly dangerous job – is just as eager to see his girl. He’s anticipating a romantic reunion, keen to take their relationship to the next level. Riley’s twisted history with Hell has garnered unwelcome interest by people willing to use her for their own purposes. Trouble is brewing in the land of the heather, the kind that will drive a wedge between her and Beck, and prove the ultimate test of their love… and their survival skills. Since Beck killed an Archangel at the end of Book #4, he’s in Scotland in GRAVE MATTERS (Book #4.5) and while he’s learning all sorts of cool things, he misses Riley intensely. So much so that he’s going to ask her to marry him the day she turns eighteen. He even has the perfect place all picked out for the proposal. But Riley presents too much of a temptation for certain summoners who want to use her as bait to summon one of Hell’s most dangerous servants. Faced with increasing doubts as to whether she should marry the man she loves, it’s up to Riley to find a way to save herself, and Beck. And if she can, it will change everything she holds dear.

RUTE - Will there be a new series of the Demon Trappers? If so, how's everything going and what can we expect?

JANA - I don’t anticipate a brand new series, but a continuation of the existing one. I might do a “spin-off” with Simon Alder (Riley ex-boyfriend) but I’m not sure yet. But then the Demon Trappers characters pretty much have a mind of their own, so I never know what they’ll do next.

Fiquem atentos ;-)

Guest Post by Jana Oliver

Jana Oliver is the author of one of my favorite series ever: "The Demon Trappers". This Monday and Tuesday I posted my reviews of "Forbidden" and "Forgiven", books 2 and 3 of the series. Right now, I'm waiting for book four to arrive soon, since I purchased in Wook almost two weeks ago. The fourth volume is called "Foretold" and is the last one of this saga. Here's a brief comment from Jana on how she feels about the end of the series:

«Wrapping up a series is a tough job for an author and that’s the case with FORETOLD, the fourth and final book in the Demon Trappers Series. Over the last two years readers have traveled along with Riley Blackthorne and Denver Beck as they fought demons, fought each other and tried to make Atlanta safe from Hell.
In short, it has been Hell. The loss of Riley’s beloved father, Paul, struck hard at both of them. They’ve made mistakes, both in their job and in their love life. They are as real as fictional characters can be, with flaws and biases. Which is why I think readers took them into their hearts.
Now that the series is ending I made sure that the fourth book brought many of the major plot threads to rest, especially the one regarding Riley and Beck. My readers have come to realize that I am unpredictable and so they never know how the story will play out. That’s much like life. The characters tell me their stories and I write them down. That’s why I love my job so much
.»

As personagens contam-me as suas histórias e eu escrevo-as.

In my mailbox

Após me ter feito chegar o primeiro livro da série "The Demon Trappers" intitulado "Forsaken", enviou-me agora o segundo e terceiro volumes ("Forbidden" e "Forgiven").

The Fairy of the Books passed by my mailbox this morning  and left me three surprises!

I must then thank to Publicações Europa-América for sending me the book by JRR Tolkien, "The Hobbit". Allow me to recall that, with the release of the movie with the same title, the author's books are in the spotlight in this edition of Lisbon Book Fair, which ends on May 13. It is a good opportunity to start reading the journey of Bilbo Baggins and his pals.

My second 'thanks' goes to the author Jana Oliver. After offering me the first book in "The Demon Trappers Series" - entitled "Forsaken" - she now sent me the second and third volumes ("Forbidden" and "Forgiven"). For those interested in learning more about this saga, here is the link http://demontrappers.co.uk/ I can't wait to start reading them!

"Forgiven"

The countdown to the release of "Forgiven" is approaching the end: the book will come out on March 1st in the UK and US! Anticipating the publication of this third volume in the Demon Trappers Series, I talked to the author, Jana Oliver, and here's what she has to say on this story:

«The third book in the Demon Trappers Series is nearly upon us. Why am I mentioning this? Because of all the books so far I have to admit this is my fav. I call it the "rooftop" book because a lot of stuff happens on, well, rooftops for whatever reason. But that's not the only action going on: in this book Riley and Beck begin to see the light, that big confrontation between Heaven and Hell lands in their laps and their ultimate enemy is revealed. And there's kissing. That's what makes this book my fav.»

Opinião| Review: "The Demon Trappers: #1 Forsaken"

SINOPSE

SYNOPSIS
Riley Blackthorne just needs a chance to prove herself – and that’s exactly what the demons are counting on… Seventeen-year-old Riley, the only daughter of legendary Demon Trapper, Paul Blackthorne, has always dreamed of following in her father's footsteps. The good news is, with human society seriously disrupted by economic upheaval and Lucifer increasing the number of demons in all major cities, Atlanta’s local Trappers’ Guild needs all the help they can get – even from a girl. When she’s not keeping up with her homework or trying to manage her growing crush on fellow apprentice, Simon, Riley’s out saving distressed citizens from foul-mouthed little devils – Grade One Hellspawn only, of course, per the strict rules of the Guild. Life’s about as normal as can be for the average demon-trapping teen. But then a Grade Five Geo-Fiend crashes Riley’s routine assignment at a library, jeopardizing her life and her chosen livelihood. And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, sudden tragedy strikes the Trappers’ Guild, spinning Riley down a more dangerous path than she ever could have imagined. As her whole world crashes down around her, who can Riley trust with her heart – and her life?

OPINIÃO * Alerta de Spoiler*
Leitura concluída a 6 de Janeiro de 2012. Votação? 5 estrelas!
Seja como for, Team Beck!

REVIEW * Spoiler Alert*
Reading completed on January 6, 2012. Rate? 5 stars! I loved this book and can't wait for the sequel to know what happens next!
In this story, the scenario presented to us is one of a partially destroyed Atlanta, where the circumstances forced everything to adapt. For example, classes are now run in former shops or other abandoned buildings. I wish the author had explained a little better what led to this chaotic picture, in which prevail the street markets and demons are loose.
It is in Atlanta we get to know Riley, the daughter of Paul Blackthorne, a talented demon trapper ("trapper", not "hunter" – that’s a different category). The spark of life of Paul extinguishes, but not always death symbolizes the end. I congratulate the author for the idea of necromancers, which was very good. I’m very curious about what happened to Paul and that made Riley’s vigils at the cemetery worthless.
Without her father around, Riley has to get back to her feet and will be on her own. I liked the fact that this character revealed so strong and capable. She acts instead of just talking, she’s fearless, faces her fears and simultaneously shows maturity in what comes to certain matters. And a girl with a job in an area of only men leads me to applaud her for her efforts.
Beck speaks in a weird way, lol! The characters’ dialogues are marked by orality, sometimes a little too much. I’d prefer that this wasn’t so pronounced. Back to Beck, he was a troubled boy who became a correct guy, a good example that teaches the reader that, despite the bad things that have happened in the past, who are in the present is up to us.
Simon is the nice guy who ends up winning Riley’s heart. Well, I prefer Beck. Okay, there's also the gorgeous Ori, a figure shrouded in mystery about who little can be discovered in this first volume. Anyway, Beck Team! =P But those who think that this book is just another novel for teenagers are mistaken. Yes, it has a hint of warmth to the heart, however it is mainly about Riley’s learning, her growth process and the hidden agenda that Hell seems to have for her.
As for the end, I think it was a little rushed. Things were moving at a steady pace and out of the blue there’s a huge disaster! A little more development before the meeting of the Guild wouldn’t hurt. Anyway, I like the pact Riley did in the end and I wonder if she won’t regret it.

Correio | Mail

Agora resta-me esperar que chegue o livro “Forsaken”.

Now I just have to wait for the book "Forsaken" to get here. According to the information I received, it should arrive by snail mail within three weeks.
For those who want to know more about this book in particular, go to

Last Thursday I went to the FNAC store at Forum Almada and I found a copy in English for sale. Here’s the link to the FNAC site if someone wants to order it: http://www.fnac.pt/The-Demon-Trappers-Forsaken-Jana-Oliver/a344831?PID=5&Mn=-1&Ra=-1&To=0&Nu=1&Fr=0
