Recebi na passada sexta-feira uma carta da escritora Jana Oliver, cujo conteúdo gostaria de partilhar convosco. O envelope trazia algum material promocional da série “The Demon Trappers”, nomeadamente dois autocolantes espectaculares com o logótipo da saga (que me faz lembrar uma tatuagem), um postal autografado e um emblema que vai direitinho para o capote do traje universitário da minha irmã.
Agora resta-me esperar que chegue o livro “Forsaken”. Segundo as indicações que me foram disponibilizadas, deve chegar por correio dentro de três semanas.

Last Friday I received a letter from the writer Jana Oliver, and I would like to share its content with you. The envelope had some promotional material from "The Demon Trappers Series", including two spectacular stickers with the logo of the saga (that reminds me a tattoo), an autographed postcard, and an iron-on patch that will go straight to the cape of my sister’s university suit.
Now I just have to wait for the book "Forsaken" to get here. According to the information I received, it should arrive by snail mail within three weeks.

Opinião| Review: RoadKill, Jackie Williams

Li “Road Kill” no dia 20 de Novembro de 2011. Gostei bastante e dou-lhe 4 estrelas.

A história começa com a apresentação de uma criatura estranha e dos seus hábitos alimentares peculiares chocantes. É-nos apresentada como a última da sua espécie e somos levados a crer que a espécie se extingue quando algo acontece à criatura. Mas será que é mesmo o fim?

Desconhecia o conceito de “Road Kill” dado os meus conhecimentos limitados da língua inglesa, pelo que não compreendi de imediato o que significava. Apenas percebi o queria dizer quando dois jovens tentam comprar carne para o churrasco do Dia das Bruxas e o talhante lhes diz que não tem nada e que a única carne que conseguirão encontrar é a dos animais mortos nas estradas. E não é que eles acabam por seguir essa dica?! Claro que lhes vai sair muito caro…

É pena ser uma história tão curta. Acho que merecia ser mais desenvolvida; a ideia por detrás é forte e não pecava se fosse mais explorada. Quem sabe se a autora não resolve fazer um livro mais completo a partir desta história?

I read “Road Kill” on November 20, 2011. I liked it pretty much, so I rate it 4 stars.

It begins with the presentation of a weird creature and its shocking peculiar feeding habits. It is presented to us as the last of its kind and we are led to believe that this species will extinguish when something happens to the creature. But will it really be the end?

I wasn’t familiar with the concept of “Road Kill” once my knowledge of the English language is limited, so I didn’t understand it right away. I only got what it meant when too young boys try to buy some meat for the Halloween’s barbacue and the butcher tells them he has none, and the only meat they will be able to find is the one from the animals killed on the road. And who knew that they will follow this tip?! Of course it will have a high price…

It’s a pity that the story is so short. I think it deserved to be more developed; the idea behind it is strong and it could be more explored. Who knows if the author decides to write a book more complete from this story?
